Newsgroup Database

Hello Joe,

Will you make the old newsgroup data available to search - allot of good information will go to waste if it disappears.

We are going to make the old newsgroup messages available. We haven't determined the format yet. We are looking at several alternatives.

Joe ---

Any decisions on the availability of the old postings?

They occupy about 400MB of disk space that could be recovered once the oldies are available.

Hi Bob,

We're still working on it.

Part of our problem is deciding what to save. There's a lot of stuff in all those newsgroups that wouldn't be of value to many. Do we cull it?

However, it looks like they will only be available for download. So, there probably won't be saving you much if any disk space if we don't cull out the useless stuff.

These days 400MB isn't much. I have about 4TB of storage attached to my main computer.

Reminds me of the day in 1983 that I drove to Atlanta and back to get a Davong 20MB hard drive for $2,000. My, how times have changed.

Best,

Joe

Joe. What if you dumped in to a CD or DVD and made it available for $10 or $20 bucks. Don't really have any suggestion of format, but that would probably be the most convenient.

I used Forte Agent and I have every post since I first started with ProMatrix.

I still have a post that you, Chuck, made in 20-Sep-2000

The entire folder including the application takes 858 meg.

You can purchase Agent Forte here:
http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php
for $29

I'm more than willing to burn a dvd of the database and send it to Joe who could put a download on the ProMatrix web page.

I just realized that this all all of Stephen and Brian going on about cricket. From 03-May-2001 to 08-Jul-2007, there are 42 posts that contain the word 'cricket'.

Chuck,

We're just not set up to sell and ship a product in the $10-$20 price range. It would be better for us to just make a zip file available for download for free.

Richard,

It looks like we'll be doing something along the lines of what you are suggesting.

We already have all the newsgroup messages in the Outlook Express format. It would be easy enough to put the messages in the format required by the newsgroup client used with Windows 7.

Then, people could download whichever version they wanted. Is a download close to 1GB a problem for people these days?

Joe, if you insist on making it available for free, who am I to disagree with you? Don't think the 1GB download presents a space or speed problem but I have heard of some ISP's getting a little pissy and might reset your connection if it takes too long. Don't know if mine will or not, about the largest I have ever downloaded was 387mg and did that during off hours.
